Brand identity design


Scotgold Resources is a mineral exploration company that offers investors the opportunity to participate in the increasingly attractive gold miming industry. AIM-listed it seeks to achieve this through the development of the Cononish Mine in Scotland, commercial production from which is anticipated to start in 2020. In addition to this it is investigating exploration both there and in other low risk jurisdictions.

Due to increased awareness of the business and commercial activity the company required a new brand logo for the Scotgold Group and their three companies – Scotgold Resources Limited, SGZ Cononish Limited and SGZ Grampian Limited.

Orbit Communications was commissioned to undertake this branding, with a key objective to ensure continuity from the original brand as well as consistency across the three companies with the new brand.

One constraint we had to work with was to retain the thistle device which was used in their current brand identity and to link the new brand identity visually to the triangle of the Scottish Gold mark logo.

The approach taken was to redraw the thistle completely, then design a monolithic identity using a strong serif typeface for the wording “Scotgold” and have interchangeable titles for each company.

The colour palette was refreshed using a dark blue and gold which reflected their Scottish mining activity and mining minerals.

The new brand logo was slowly phased across all areas of the business, including signage and the website.
