Why Aria is celebrating International Women’s Day 2020
As we mark IWD 2020 I have been encouraged to write about what this day means to me. Personally, I don’t want to talk about the underrepresentation of women in male-dominated sectors nor about the struggles women face just for being that, women.
Don’t get me wrong. These are unquestionably worrying issues but are somewhat acknowledged, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this in the first place. I am at a very early stage of my career and I have unfortunately already faced situations where I have been challenged for no other reasons than my gender, my age or a combination of both. It’s far from great, but it’s changing. One situation at a time, one day at a time.
Today, however, I want to celebrate the sisterhood I have also encountered so far, which I believe deserves greater acknowledgement than those other situations. To me IWD is an opportunity to celebrate the network of women who have inspired confidence, ambition, resilience, leadership and self-growth, both professionally and personally, to any of us. Whoever they may be, let’s take a moment to praise the many women who, often unintentionally, have encouraged every one of us to thrive through adversity in a world ruled by men.
Today is for those women. Today is for all of us.
Happy International Women’s Day!
